Sports guards in Lugano– protecting your smile on the field
A well-fitted sportsguard can mean the difference between a good day and an unexpected dentalinjury. Losing a tooth is costly and time-consuming to replace, and nobodywants the discomfort of a gap when smiling or eating. A sports guard is asimple, effective investment for anyone involved in sport where contact orfalls are likely.
What is a sports guard?
A sports guard is a custom-fitted protective shield worn over your teeth to prevent damage during sport. It is essential for contact sports such as hockey, boxing, and rugby, and equally valuable for activities like skiing or mountain biking where the risk of falls is significant. The guard protects teeth from chipping, loosening, or being knocked out entirely, and absorbs impact to the jaw, reducing the risk of injury to lips, tongue, and gums.
Types of sports guards
Custom-made sports guards
These provide the best protection and are crafted from precise impressions of your teeth by a dental professional. They offer the best fit, comfort, and durability, and are the option we recommend at Alpine Smiles.
Boil-and-bite guards
These can be adapted at home by softening in boiling water and biting down to mould the guard to your teeth. More affordable but they do not offer the precision fit or protection of a custom-made guard.
Stock sports guards
One-size-fits-all models available in most sports shops. Inexpensive but tend to be uncomfortable, may hinder breathing, and provide minimal protection compared to custom options.
Benefits of a sports guard
A sports guard is particularly beneficial for athletes in contact sports and for anyone involved in activities such as mountain biking or skateboarding. In some cases, insurance policies may also require a sports guard for coverage during sports-related dental injuries. It is worth checking your policy before your next season begins.
Sports guards for children
Children with active lifestyles or those involved in contact sports benefit significantly from a custom sports guard, as they are more prone to accidental impacts. A well-fitted guard protects developing teeth and growing jaws, reducing the risk of serious dental injuries at a stage when every tooth matters.
Care and maintenance
Rinse your sports guard after each use and clean it with a soft brush and mild soap. Store it in a cool dry place in its protective case, away from heat sources. Inspect it regularly for signs of wear and replace it when needed. For children, more frequent replacement may be necessary as teeth and jaws continue to develop.
